Hard water and your dishwasher: what the scale costs

Hard water is the background condition behind a large share of dishwashing complaints, and the reason is arithmetic: dissolved calcium and magnesium come out of solution when water is heated, and a dishwasher heats water on every cycle. What actually helps

Descale monthly, before performance drops. An empty cycle with a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner dissolves the scale layer while it is still thin. Waiting until the dishes come out dirty means the scale has already reached the element and the valve, which is where a bottle of cleaner turns into a $340-374 repair. If you are buying a dishwasher for hard water

The features that earn their money in a hard-water market are a built-in salt-fed water softener (some European-engineered lines, notably certain Bosch and Miele models, treat the water inside the machine), a stainless steel tub, because scale releases from steel far more readily than from plastic, and a manually accessible filter you can rinse monthly. A basic model with a softener will outclean a premium model without one in 180-250 ppm water. A whole-home softener removes the problem at the source, but it is a plumbing project rather than an appliance repair, and it does not dissolve the scale already inside the machine.
