Appliance brand reliability: what three datasets actually measure
Three datasets are routinely quoted as brand rankings, and they measure three different things. One is a consumer survey of machines bought in the last one to three years. One is a retailer's own first-year service record with a real denominator: the number of units it sold. One is a repair company's record of which component it replaced, expressed as a share of that brand's own completed repairs. Put side by side, they do not agree, and the disagreement is the most useful thing on this page — because each one can only answer the question its sample was built to answer.

Each row is the source's own description of its own sample, not a summary of a summary. None of the three is a random sample of American households, and none of them claims to be.
Only one of the three has a denominator
This is the difference that decides whether a ranking can be used.
A share of a brand's own repairs tells you what fails on that machine if it fails. It deliberately does not tell you how likely the machine is to fail, and the publisher of that dataset says so: the figures are built as a share of each brand-and-appliance combination's own jobs precisely so that brand popularity cannot distort them. That is the honest construction for the question it answers, and it is why it can say an LG refrigerator compressor is 9.8% of LG refrigerator repairs — see what fails by brand — without claiming LG refrigerators break more often. A survey of owner-reported problems gets closer to likelihood, but it measures satisfaction and experience on a sample of owners, weighted and indexed, and it does not publish units sold either.
Only the third kind of number answers "how likely is this to break" directly, and it needs the denominator: units sold. Yale Appliance publishes exactly that for one category, defines it in one sentence — the percentage of units that require at least one service call within the first year of ownership — and every figure on the page is a rate against a count of machines it sold and serviced.
What a real failure rate looks like

Induction cooktops sold and serviced by one New England retailer (442 units). Service rate is the share of units needing at least one service call in year one. The last row is the same retailer's average across every appliance category it services, which is what makes the comparison meaningful: it is the same measurement applied to a different group of machines.
Four things fall out of that table, and none of them is visible in a ranking without a denominator. The spread inside one category is nearly fivefold — 1.9% at the top against 9.2% at the bottom — so "which brand" is a real question rather than noise. The category itself is better than average: 5.0% against 8.3% across all appliances at the same retailer, so an induction cooktop is a below-average risk purchase even though two of its brands are at or above the all-appliance average. The best number is not a small difference, it is a different regime: at 1.9%, nearly 98 of every 100 units need no service at all in the first year. And still 5% of them need a visit, which is the part buyers skip: a reliable appliance is not a maintenance-free one, it is one that is less likely to need a repair you did not plan for.
Two warnings the source attaches to its own data are worth repeating. Price does not track the ranking — the same retailer's observation is that a $6,000 cooktop can be less reliable than a $3,600 one, so the badge and the price are not proxies for the rate. And the brands are not independent samples: the source notes that three of its top four come out of the same factory group, which is a fact about manufacturing rather than a coincidence, and it means a ranking that looks like four choices can be closer to two.
Where the datasets disagree, and why that is the informative part
The J.D. Power 2025 study names GE Appliances the most reliable appliance brand, with the top score for service experience and category wins across kitchen and laundry, including clothes dryers and both front-load and top-load washers. The repair records, meanwhile, show GE as the control-board outlier in two separate categories: a board is 5.5% of GE washing machine repairs, the highest of any brand with a reported figure, against 1.5% for Samsung; and 4.3% of GE dishwasher repairs, against 1.2% for Bosch.
Read as a contradiction, that looks like a problem. It is not one. The two numbers answer different questions and both can be true at the same time: fewer things go wrong on a GE machine, and when something does go wrong, a board is more likely to be the thing. A brand can be reliable on average and still have a characteristic failure, and the characteristic failure is what decides your quote. That is the reason this site keeps the two pages apart instead of merging them into one score — a single reliability index would have hidden the only part of the picture you can act on.
Every one of these datasets has an owner with an interest
None of them is neutral, and saying so plainly is more useful than pretending otherwise.
- The survey result is published by the company that won it. The J.D. Power 2025 appliance study is a third-party study, but the source used on this page is the winning manufacturer's own press release about it, issued January 2026 — which is also the only public source consulted here for the study's brand-level outcome. GE Appliances is the winner and a Haier company. The study's sample and method are stated in that release; the interest is the company's.
- The service rates come from a retailer that sells the brands it ranks, and the article is a buying guide as much as a data release. Its advantage is that a service rate needs a denominator, and a retailer is one of the few parties that has one.
- The repair records come from a company that sells the repairs it counts. Its advantage is the opposite one: it holds the component-level detail, and it publishes the sample size behind every figure.
So the test is not "is this source neutral", because on this subject nothing is. The test is whether the source states the denominator and the scope, and whether the number it publishes can be checked against the question you are asking. A ranking that will not say what its percentage is a percentage of is the one to discount, whether or not it is independent.
How to use any of this
If you are buying, ask for a rate per unit with the unit count behind it, and read the scope before the ranking: one retailer's induction cooktop data is a real rate about a narrow thing, and it is not a statement about the same brand's dishwasher. Treat a category average as the baseline rather than the target — the useful question is whether a brand sits below it and by how much. If you already own the machine, the failure rate is no longer the relevant number, because your machine has either failed or it has not: what matters is which part failed and what it costs, which is the part-level data in what fails by brand and what a typical repair costs by appliance. The service rates, the category average and the all-appliance average are from a New England retailer's own first-year service data across 442 induction cooktop units, serviced by its 35 in-house technicians, published in its 2026 induction cooktop reliability guide. The study figures are from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability & Service Study as described in GE Appliances' press release of 30 January 2026, which states a base of more than 12,000 appliance reliability responses and 1,000 appliance service responses and covers appliances bought within the previous one to three years.
