Repair or replace?
Three numbers decide most appliance calls: how old the machine is, what the repair quote says, and what a comparable new unit costs installed. The rule the repair trade uses is half of the installed price of a new machine, weighted by age.
How the number is built
The ceiling is half of what a new machine costs you installed, because below that line a repair buys years of life for a fraction of the replacement bill. Age then decides the ties: under five or six years almost any single-part repair is worth doing, and past eight to ten years a quote that clears the ceiling usually is not.
