Dryer fires: what the national data says, and why the vent is the part nobody calls about

Two datasets describe the same fault from opposite ends, and the gap between them is the useful part. National fire data says what happens after a dryer catches: how many fires, what started them, what burned first. A repair company's own service records say what makes people pick up the phone — and almost nobody calls about the thing that starts the fires. This page puts the two side by side, because the difference between them is a maintenance decision rather than a repair one.

The national fire data

US fire departments responded to an average of 13,820 home structure fires a year in which a clothes dryer was involved in the ignition, across 2014–2018. Those fires caused an average of 7 civilian deaths, 344 civilian injuries and $233 million in direct property damage annually, and dryers account for about 4% of all home structure fires. The figures come from the NFPA's Home Dryer Fires report (June 2020), which is built from the US Fire Administration's incident reporting system and the NFPA's annual fire experience survey; incidents never reported to a fire department are excluded, so they are a floor rather than a ceiling.

What starts them is unusually clear for fire statistics, because one cause dominates and it is not a component failure:

In 27% of dryer fires the first item ignited was dust, fibre or lint — the same failure named a second way. The distinction matters because it is a material accumulating in a specific place, not a part wearing out: inside the blower housing, in the ductwork behind the machine, and matted at the exterior vent hood. None of that is visible from the laundry room and none of it is cleared by emptying the screen.

Fuel type does not change the risk, which is worth saying because it is the question people ask first. Among dryers involved in home fires, 78% were electric and 22% gas — almost exactly the 79% and 21% split of dryers installed in US households. The fire share matches the ownership share, so the risk lives in airflow and accumulated lint rather than in what heats the drum. Gas dryers carry their own separate hazard in combustion products and the flue, but they do not ignite more often.

What the service records say

The second dataset is a repair company's own completed dryer work — 2,277 service visits, of which 1,799 were completed and 1,399 involved a replaced part. It describes what customers actually rang about:

That table is the finding. Only 5.1% of dryer visits are about the vent, while a failure to clean sits behind 32% of the fires. A restricted vent is the largest single fire cause and one of the smallest reasons anyone makes the call — not because people are careless, but because it does not announce itself. It presents as a load that needs two cycles, or a machine that stops heating, and by then the restriction has been cooking the components for months.

The two biggest categories in the table are the same fault arriving later under a different name: not heating at 26.7% and takes too long at 6.5% are frequently a vent restriction that has already burned something out. Which produces the number that should settle the decision: clearing a restricted vent runs a median of $357, and replacing the heating element that a restricted vent burns out runs $346. They cost the same, and the second one usually follows the first.

These are the symptoms that show up before the fire risk becomes acute. Any one of them is a reason to check the duct rather than the drum.

Why this is a maintenance page rather than a repair page

Because the arithmetic points the same way as the safety argument. A dryer repair is one of the repairs households actually approve — of the quoted dryer repairs in the same records, 16.4% were not taken up, the highest part-fitted share of any appliance category — and the diagnosis that ends a dryer's life is usually the one a restricted vent caused. Cleaning a vent at $357 and replacing an element at $346 cost the same, so the choice is between paying before the failure and paying after it, with the fire risk sitting on one side only. The approval data shows the same pattern from the other direction: dryers are approved at 79.5%, twenty points above washing machines at a nearly identical median price, so households do fix dryers rather than replace them — which makes the maintenance case easier to act on here than on almost any other appliance.

Where these numbers come from

The fire figures belong to the NFPA and are cited to its Home Dryer Fires report (Marty Ahrens, June 2020, reporting annual averages for 2014–2018); the electric and gas ownership split is from the American Housing Survey (2017) as cited in that report. The service-call figures are from a repair company's own job records (2,277 dryer visits across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Pennsylvania), where a single visit can match more than one reason-for-call category, so those shares do not sum to 100%, and median costs include the part, the labour and the service call together.
